What if you actually have two separate lives? I have a day job which doesn't really allow me to have extracurricular activities. And I have a website/social media persona which is gaining lots of traction and becoming popular - and would create a problem over at the day job.

Here's how I'm thinking of resolving the dilemma: use my real name for the day job, and add my middle name for the extracurricular job. If someone searches my real name, the one with the middle name will probably appear lower on the search results. Then, when I retire from the day job three years from now, I can remove the middle name.

I also have several social media 'handles' left over from earlier days, so it's all a bit of a mess. I just don't want to jeopardize myself professionally, nor do I want to miss the opportunities I now have of ramping up my extracurricular activities into a REAL business.

If anyone has any thoughts on how to handle this I'd certainly be happy to hear them...

Thanks for that, it has really helped. It is simply to much to handle two different profiles online. It is becoming a strain having to duck in and out of profiles...

food for thought

I have been debating whether or not to split our corporate Facebook page to speak to our different market segments. It's a pharmacy that serves four unique groups, veterinarians, pet owners, physicians and patients. And within each of these are sub segments that all require specific content and messaging, and mixing them all up into one doesn't sound like a good move. What is the school of thought for a business with distinct market segments having a Facebook profile? Should there be only one, or multiple, and if multiple, how should that be set up?
